Did you notice the little pig at the adoration of the magi?
Pig’s lard was one of the remedies for “Saint Anthony’s fire”, a skin disease named after the saint (pictured at far left), which was an epidemic at the time of this painting.
A church of a hospital devoted to Anthony probably commissioned this work.
